Shandong, May 16, 2022. Recently, a pipe conveyor system for coal transportation and storage to power plants has successfully completed its trial run and started normal operation with load in Rizhao Port, Shandong Province. It is equipped with Continental¡¯s large diameter pipe conveyor belts. During the operation, the power transmission device ran stably, the joints of the conveyor belts were well overlapped, and the whole equipment ran smoothly and orderly.

Starting from the north side of #18-#20 Berth Automated Storage Yard in the west of the Shijiu Port Area, the pipe conveyor system passes over the port logistics railroad, the coastal highway, and the urban spillway and extends itself outside the port to the wagon dumper room of the power plant.

With a total length of 2.4 km, the pipe diameter of 645 mm, and the designed capacity of 3,000 t/h, this project became one of the largest diameter pipe conveyor systems in China and will play an important role in supporting the construction of the smart green ports.

Clean transportation: fully enclosed system enables ¡°one-stop¡± coal transportation

Closed systems such as pipe conveyors can minimize dust emissions and protect transported material from external influences (such as rain, snow, sunlight and wind). Compared to conventional transportation such as the road and railway transportation, closed conveyor systems have obvious advantages in terms of economic and sustainable factors within certain distances. The reason is pipe conveyor belts operate with lower CO2 emissions and less idling time. As a result, pipe conveyor systems are highly favored in the mining and thermal power industries.

Safe transportation: excellent closure and pipe torsion resistance

Conventional pipe conveyor belt technology has been available in China for more than 20 years. Meanwhile, due to the limits of traditional pipe design, in real practice operators often face challenges such as collapse of the pipe belt, excessive opening in overlap and torsion of the pipe, etc. Therefore, with pipe conveyors, especially those with large diameter, preliminary design and appropriate professional verification at early stage are extremely important.

Efficient transportation: Finite element analysis (FEA) methods effectively extends service life and reduces unit delivery costs

In Continental, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods are applied for modeling and validation when designing the pipe belt. Compared with conventional pipe belt design model, the FEA method not only helps to ensure the pipe shape in a better way, but also facilitates design optimization for longer service life.
